Synology Notifications

Synology Disk Station Manager (DSM) provides notifications for a wide range of events. DSM provides four ways to receive the notifications: email, SMS, pushed to your mobile device, or pushed to your browser (Google Chrome or Safari only).

Notification Methods

DSM has built in email notification support for Gmail, Yahoo Outlook and QQ Mail. There’s also support for custom SMTP server settings which allows pretty much any email service to be used.

Synology can also send an email from their own servers although this is enabled in the Push Service section, not under email.

Clickatell is the only SMS provider with built-in support. Clickatell is a bulk SMS provider and this feature is intended for IT departments which use SMS for notifications. While consumer SMS services can be used finding the URL to be used could be difficult.

If you install the DS Finder mobile app then notifications can be pushed to your phone (or tablet). While DS Finder only connects to Synology NASs on the local network the notifications are received even if the only connection is cellular.

While relatively new, notifications can also be sent to Google Chrome browsers if you install an Chrome extension or to a Safari browser, no extension needed.

Notification Events

Pretty much everything, one either success or failure. I’m not going to list all the choices here since there are over a hundred. After setting up the notification methods I’d recommend going through the list and picking the events that you want to be notified about.

I typically have anything related to an error sent to my phone while turning off all non-error notification such as a successful backup.

For something as important as a backup I sometimes setup a notification on a successful completion since a backup that doesn’t run at all isn’t seen as a failure so a positive confirmation would be nice and lets me know things are working.

Personally I don’t like email notifications but I do use them at times, mainly for less important events. For example, if I am tracking successful backups I’ll have the notification sent to my email. I’ve found the push notifications to my phone to be both reliable and convenient and therefore I haven’t needed the email notifications.

With a little effort it’s possible to limit notifications to events that require you to act. This prevents receiving so many notifications that you start to ignore them.
