A Bucket Full of Synology Package Updates – Part 1

Synology News

Synology updated two dozen packages earlier this week, in addition to the DSM 6.01 update. Rather than wait and recap them all on Friday, as I typically do, I decided to publish this first batch early.

If you run Photo Station you’ll want to read about the update before you upgrade, so that you can plan accordingly. The rest of the upgrades are the typical type of updates. You’ll want to take the usual precautions (backups, allow enough time, etc…) but they are fairly straight-forward and shouldn’t impact you beyond the time needed to upgrade.

Not every package was updated. Among the most commonly used packages, Audio Station and Video Station did not receive updates. (Although Video Station was updated at the end of May)

Acronym Alert:
SRM is Synology Router Manager, which is currently in beta.
EDS is Synology’s Embedded Disk Station (EDS14)

Antivirus Essential

Antivirus Essential has been updated to version 1.4.0-2716. This updates the ClamAV engine so if you use AV Essential it should be updated even if you don’t experience the other issues.

Fixes include:

  1. Fixed an issue where database update might fail.
  2. Fixed an issue where database update might not end.
  3. Upgraded ClamAV.
  4. Enhanced system performance by processing one scan task at a time.

Cloud Station Server

Cloud Station Server has been updated to version 4.0-4207. This brings upgrades to the Cloud Station desktop client (now called Cloud Station ShareSync) and the Cloud Station Backup desktop client. All of my Mac and Windows computers automatically updated their Cloud Station and Cloud Station Backup clients.

Changes include:

  1. Initial support for SRM 1.1 and onward.
  2. Added support for EDS14.
  3. Fixed an issue where Cloud Station Server status may remain connecting in certain circumstances.
  4. Fixed an issue where files may be re-uploaded after being renamed.

Cloud Station ShareSync

This is the new(ish) name for the Cloud Station Client. It’s been updated to version 4.0-4207 with the following changes.

  1. Fixed an issue where Cloud Station clients may retain unnecessary files.
  2. Fixed an issue where file rename may fail due to network disconnection.
  3. Added support for EDS14.

My ShareSync clients on Windows and OS X updated themselves automatically when I upgraded the Cloud Station Server.

CMS (Central Management System)

CMS has been updated to version 1.1.0591-0593 for compatibility with DSM 6.0.1.

DNS Server

Synology DNS Server was upgraded to version 1.2.0-0129
which included an upgrade to bind 9.9.8-P3.

Docker has been updated to version 1.11.1-0265 which fixed an issue where containers created in DSM 5.2 could not be displayed after upgrading to DSM 6.0.

Drupal has been updated to version 7.43-0109 which patches a multitude of security vulnerabilities:

  1. Upgraded to version 7.43 to address multiple vulnerabilities (SA-CORE-2016-001, CVE-2016-3162, CVE-2016-3163, CVE-2016-3164, CVE-2016-3165, CVE-2016-3166, CVE-2016-3167, CVE-2016-3168, CVE-2016-3169, CVE-2016-3170, CVE-2016-3171).

Hyper Backup

Hyper Backup has been updated to version 1.0-0155 with the following changes:

  1. Improved restoration performance of Backup Explorer.
  2. Fixed an issue where restoring a single file over 50GB from public cloud storage might fail.
  3. Fixed an issue where domain/LDAP users might have insufficient privileges.
  4. Supports multiple external storage devices as backup destination for Local (Legacy).

Hyper Backup Vault

Hyper Backup Vault was updated to version 1.0-0085 with the following two changes:

  1. Fixed an issue where backup destinations might duplicate after upgrade.
  2. Improved restoration performance of Backup Explorer.

MailPlus Server

MailPlus Server has been updated to version 1.0-0190 which includes the following changes:

  1. Optimized the resource utilization according to the system memory of the Synology NAS.
  2. Fixed an issue where the added certificate for MailPlus Server might be reset to default certificate after the upgrade of MailPlus Server.
  3. Adjusted the license mechanism by centrally managing all licenses on the primary server in the high-availability cluster.
  4. Minor bug fixes.

FYI: The related client was not updated.

MariaDB, which is used as a database by other packages, has been updated to version 5.5.49-0065 which includes security patches and enhanced backup abilities.

  1. Upgraded to version 5.5.49 to address multiple vulnerabilities (CVE-2016-0647, CVE-2016-0648, CVE-2016-0666, CVE-2016-0643).
  2. When backing up MariaDB, events, procedures and functions now can also be backed up.

Photo Station

Photo Station was updated to Version: 6.5.0-3218.

This is a significant update in that it will re-index all photos after the upgrade. This will impact the performance of Photo Station and, depending on the model, may impact the DiskStation performance. If you have a large photo library you’ll want to do this at night. In return, you now have the ability to give photos a rating of 1 to 5 stars.

The full list of changes include:

  1. Users now can browse/edit photo rating, and filter photos by the rating. With the new feature, Photo Station will start the re-index mechanism after the upgrade.
  2. Added options to disable the detailed information of photos/videos and the download function for guests/general users.
  3. Users now can set an album cover in smart albums.
  4. Conversion of the shared folder “photo” to Windows ACL privileges is now available, and the configured albums’ privileges will be applied.
  5. Enhanced the performance when the first and second level albums contain numerous sub-albums.
  6. Minor bug fixes.

Time to start updating those packages.
